Most silk yarn is processed to be smooth, lustrous, and perfectly even. Madragoa isn't, and that's what makes it interesting.
Bourette silk — also known as raw or spun silk — is produced from the outer layers of the silkworm cocoon: the shorter fibres that conventional silk processing typically discards. Spinning them into yarn creates something that behaves quite differently from the silk you might expect. Rather than a glossy, slippery yarn, Madragoa has a soft matte finish with very slight textural nubs throughout — a quiet, understated quality that makes finished fabric look handcrafted and considered rather than polished and formal.
Silk is a naturally temperature-regulating fibre — warm when you need it, cool when you don't — which makes Madragoa genuinely useful year-round. Lightweight and yet surprisingly insulating, it's an excellent choice for garments you'll actually reach for across seasons: lightweight cardigans, shawls, summer-to-autumn layering pieces. The 4-ply construction gives it durability and good stitch definition without sacrificing that characteristic silk softness and breathability.
Produced in Portugal as part of the Rosários 4 Eco Collection, Madragoa is a thoughtful use of materials: fibre that would otherwise go to waste, spun into something beautiful and genuinely wearable. Browse the current colourways at Hanks Yarn Parlour — or come in to feel it for yourself.
