Knit Your First Jumper
Wednesday May 1 - July 3About this event
Embark on a cozy adventure to create your very first jumper! Whether you're a novice or looking to refresh your skills, this 4 part class is perfect for those eager to dive into the art of crafting a warm, stylish garment with your own hands.
Knitting a jumper may seem intimidating, but if you can knit and purl in the round, we can show you the rest! In this class we'll be making a classic raglan pullover using Tin Can Knits Flax pattern. This trusty pattern is extremely well written and size inclusive. It is constructed top-down and knitted seamlessly in the round.
You may choose to knit either a child or adult size jumper (I don't recommend starting with baby sizes as working such small garments can be quite fiddly). The sizing is as follows:
2-4 yrs, 4-6 yrs, 6-8 yrs, 8-10 yrs, XS, S, S/M, M, M/L, L, XL, XXL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL, 6XL
Finished Chest Measurement: 22, 24, 26, 28, 31, 33.5, 35, 37, 39, 43, 47, 51, 55, 58, 62, 66“
Yardage: 440, 500, 680, 700, 800, 850, 1000, 1050, 1100, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700, 1800, 2000, 2100
As sizing and thus materials will vary greatly between participants, this class includes a £30 voucher towards materials. This way everyone gets enough to get started and you can choose from any of the aran weight yarns in the shop or even put it towards needles.
The materials you will need:
- 4 stitch markers, 1 in a unique colour to mark the beginning of the round
- Aran or worsted weight yarn meterage corresponding to your selected size (refer to list above). Click here for some great yarn options for your jumper that you can browse on our website.
- The recommended needles are 16"/40cm and 32"/80cm circulars in sizes 4mm and 5mm. However, you may find that you need to adjust these sizes to obtain gauge, which we will discuss in the first class. If you can, it's a good idea to bring a few extra sizes between 3.5-5.5mm. We will be aiming for a gauge of 18st per 4"/10cm. If you're a tight knitter, you may need to go up a needle size or two. Likewise, if you knit loosely, you may need to go down a size or two.
The schedule is as follows:
May 1 - Discuss sizing and make a swatch to prepare for next class. If you can, please bring multiple sizes of needles around 3.5 - 5.5mm
May 8 - Now that you have had time to make a swatch and determine what size you'd like to knit, we'll cast on the jumper together starting at the neckline and working the yoke.
June 5 - Finish up the yoke and work short-row shaping before seperating the body and sleeves.
July 3 - In the final class, we'll look at working the sleeves.
Please note, there will be some homework to do in between classes. If you have any questions regarding materials or anything else about the class, please don't hesitate to get in touch via email, telephone or call down to the shop.
